Let's get real about regret - the memories sting!
When we leave a situation where we wish we could've done something better, it can be hard to forgive ourselves. We find ourselves dwelling on the past and forget our biggest regrets can inspire positive change.
Our Regrets Can Feel Immensely Triggering
I saw a video on X recently, which brought back an example memory. In this particular video, a psychologist spoke about lessons learned from patients who were dying.
During the timeframe I worked as a nurse, lessons from patients at the end of life left me with many memories. Some of them were beautiful, and others involved moments of regret.
Those lessons eventually became valuable inspiration for me.
Here's How a Moment of Regret Inspired Me to Work Harder
Caring for one man in particular, left an imprint on my heart. I remember feeling so burnt out placing a blanket at the foot of his bed - I had placed it haphazardly. He was upset and angrily said to me “is that the best you can do?”
At the time it really was the best I could do. I was going through the worst period in my life and it felt exhausting to care for other people because I was struggling to care for myself.
The next day, he passed away & I remember feeling so much regret over how I placed his blanket. I sat with guilt for many days, and his words lingered with me.
Now, whenever I encounter a situation where I feel like I can’t do any more, I remember his words, push myself, and ask myself "is this really the best I can do?"
I thank this man, honor his memory, and hope he's resting in peace. Without experiencing regret from our interaction, I wouldn’t have the inspiration to push myself. Regret from our encounter strengthened my mentality.
Mindset Coaching Exercise - Transform Regret Into Inspiration with this Mindset Shift
By shifting our mindset to allow regret to empower our future, we inhibit ourselves from dwelling in self-punishment and transform lingering feelings of self-loathing into inspiration instead of being held prisoner by painful memories.
The next time you think of a moment you regret - can you support yourself by considering how past actions have made you a better person in the present? And if nothing comes to mind, how can you start using memories of regret to create positive change?
Every time you recall a moment of regret , bridge the feeling to connect with how you've changed. By continuously walking yourself through this mindset shift, you'll find it easier to stop dwelling.
