Lessons From Saturn in Astrology - "Stay Another Day"

Updated: Feb 25

Saturn's lessons in astrology make me think of my grandfather's saying.

When I was a little girl and wasn’t feeling well, I would spend the day with my grandparents. I didn’t enjoy the discomfort of being sick but I loved being with them because it was always such a comforting experience. My grandma would make me a honey lemon drink to soothe my sore throat, and I would spend my day on their couch resting. To bide the time, I would read the newspaper from my hometown, called the Maui News, and would check my horoscope and read the “Dear Abby” advice column every day.

My Childhood Love of Astrology & Advice

I always loved to see what the stars had in store, and being young and naive, I would wait to see if things would manifest throughout the day even though the target audience for relationships and career changes were far older than me. When I read about people’s problems in the Dear Abby column, I would always feel empathy for them and think about whether I would have given the same advice she gave.

Even when I was feeling better, my grandpa would always tell my parents to let me stay at their house another day. Sometimes my parents wanted to push me to go back to school, but my Grandpa always wanted me to take my time and make sure I was ready.

Who Is Saturn/Lord Shani in Vedic Astrology?

Saturn, which represents our career and the karmic lessons we face in astrology, makes me think of my grandpa‘s saying.

Saturn (or Lord Shani) is known as “he who causes the three worlds to tremble in fear” because of the way he delivers karmas we have accrued in this and prior lifetimes. He’s associated with creating delays, and obstacles we have to face. His transits, which cause re-evaluation and sometimes bring resistance into our lives, challenge us to grow from them, encouraging us to “stay another day” and be patient with ourselves as we revisit past mistakes or have to face the rawness of our shadow selves as we’re evolving. But there is a light to his darkness, if can we allow ourselves to see it.

Looking back, staying another day ultimately allowed me to spend more time with things I never would have learned in school and eventually became my career trajectory! A childhood interest in horoscopes led to an adult pursuit of learning astrology and the Dear Abby column led to building a community for women to receive sound advice. I didn’t know it back then, but the very resistance my grandpa gave my parents to let me stay another day was helping foster the skills I’d be using later in life.

In many ways, this is how we can learn to view challenges during Saturn’s transits as blessings. Just like with the story I told you, if we can look back and find the purpose in these lessons which don’t seem apparent at the time, they can provide a foundation for our future selves. All it takes is for us to stay another day and remain patient as we try to understand the purpose behind the resistance we face wherever he is transiting.
