Do you ever feel like you're always the one giving in your relationships? Has it felt disappointing?
When we assign titles to relationships like best friend or boyfriend, each one of these titles has associated expectations which to each person, has an entirely different meaning.
Thus, when we experience someone's else's actions which differ from our own definition of these titles, it can lead to feeling like we're always hyperextending ourselves, or feeling relationship imbalance we can't explain. When in actuality, our disappointment comes from being unable to see the root cause of our disappointment is a misunderstanding.
Each Person's Perspective is a Unique Definition
Just think about it - the qualities of a "best friend" to you, might be the qualities of an acquaintance to me. So if I continuously treat the person I see as a best friend, based on my definition, but they don't reciprocate, it will always leave me feeling disappointed. It's not their fault - to me, the title "best friend" has a different meaning.
In relationships, a common example we observe is when someone perceives a relationship as being committed, before the other person verbalizes they're ready. It's that moment when you're just about to be exclusive with the person you love, and you find out they're still openly dating. This can create conflict as a result of two people having separate definitions about whether they're dating exclusively.
